Shaun Peter Mallonga is a queer Filipino-Canadian artist living and working on the unceded lands of the Coast Salish peoples - Squamish, Stó:lō, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam Nations.Shaun was born in Vancouver and spent most of his formative years between Quezon City,Philippines and New Delhi, India. This lavish and migrant upbringing has significantly charged his perspectives on his own authenticity and privilege.
He primarily works in ceramics, sculpture, drawing, and installation to address themes around domesticity, hierarchy, labour and sacredness. Shaun’s aesthetic curiosity in Gothic art,Philippine folk art and all things camp and glamorous conveys his affinity for melancholic and mirthy subject matter. Through his use of wit and caution, he conjures narrative spaces for high and low conversations.
Shaun holds a diploma from the Langara College Fine Arts program (2014), and has received his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from the Alberta University of the Arts (2017) in Calgary, AB. He has attended residencies at both Medalta International Artist-in-Residence program in Medicine Hat, AB, and the Harbourfront Centre Craft & Design Artist-In-Residence program in Toronto, ON. His work has been exhibited in both Canada and the US. Shaun is currently employed as a potter and pottery instructor at a local social enterprise, JustPotters, located on Commercial Drive and East 1st Avenue.
