Watch this video to review the steps to go through when tackling a spectroscopy problem. I recommend pausing the video at each step, so you can try it first. The next file below....is a handout of the problem, you can print out - it contains the spectra!
Note: At the end of this problem, we are left wondering if the compound has one of two structures...there is a peak in the IR found in the fingerprint (in the range 1250-1350) which may lead us to consider one structure being more the likely answer over another. Though peaks in the fingerprint are a little doubious (lots of overlap in that region)...in this case it does point to the CORRECT structure. Refer to Klein's table 14.2 to see the information of this peak between 1250-1350 cm-1.
